CIC Statement of Objects

  1. To promote, advance, co-ordinate, facilitate, demonstrate and implement the teachings and practices of Islam in accordance with the Statement of Faith herein amongst Muslims, Non-Muslims, and Islamic organizations in Canada and abroad.
  1. Provided that these objects shall include only those which are exclusively charitable at law, and to accomplish the aforesaid objects:

(a) to uphold and promote a belief in the Statement of Faith as follows:

“I believe in God Almighty, without ascribing any partner to Him, in Prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him), to whom the Qur'an was revealed, as the final Prophet and Messenger of God, and in the Qur'an and the Sunnah (teachings) of Prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him), as the basis of guidance in human life and practice”,

and to require that all Members and Directors of the Corporation subscribe to the such Statement of Faith;

(b) to facilitate, co-ordinate and encourage the acceptance and practice of the Islamic faith in Canada by calling Muslims and non-Muslims to Islam in accordance with the Islamic religious duty to practice Da'wa;

(c) to provide a forum from Muslims and Islamic organizations in Canada to meet, fellowship, communicate and share their common faith, and to interface and dialogue with other religious faiths in Canada;

(d) to conduct, support and encourage research, study and discussion of the Islamic faith, including its Holy Book (the Qur'an), the Prophet Mohamed’s teaching (Hadith), the Prophet Mohamed's life (Seerah), Islamic theology (Tawheed), Islamic rituals (Ibadat), Islamic spirituality, Islamic law (Share'a), Islamic philosophy, as well as Islamic history, science, medicine and social sciences (Al Olloom), and for such research, study and discussions to develop an understanding of the relevancy of the Islamic faith to matters of social responsibility in Canada;

(e) to assist and strengthen Members in adhering to and practicing the Islamic faith, both individually and collectively as part of a religious faith community;

(f) to undertake, facilitate and co-ordinate meetings, conferences, seminars, courses, studies and programs to encourage the acceptance and practice of the Islamic faith in Canada;

(g) to encourage, support, facilitate and develop leadership within the Islamic faith community in Canada;

(h) to encourage, facilitate, co-ordinate and develop an understanding within the Islamic faith community concerning the role of Muslims in Canada, the expression of their faith within a pluralistic society, and the application of Islamic principles and practices to matters of life and social concerns in Canada;

(i) to encourage, facilitate, co-ordinate and develop an understanding by Muslims and Islamic organizations in Canada concerning matters of social relevancy from an Islamic perspective and to communicate and present such understanding to governments, government related bodies and public authorities;

(j) to establish, maintain, operate, facilitate and co-ordinate Islamic schools and institutions for the provision of religious education in the Islamic faith for students in nursery schools, kindergartens, elementary school, high schools, and post secondary education institution;

(k) to establish, maintain, operate, facilitate and co-ordinate colleges and theological teaching institutions to train men and women in the Islamic Faith as lay persons, Islamic workers and religious leaders within the Islamic community;

(l) to give scholarships and bursaries in accordance with the charitable objects herein;

(m) to undertake, conduct facility and co-ordinate programs to alleviate human suffering and to meet the physical and emotional needs of Muslims and non-Muslims in need within Canada and abroad in order to demonstrate and express the Islamic faith by practicing the Islamic religious duty of giving charity (Zakah);

(n) to undertake, conduct, facilitate and co-ordinate programs to assist in the integration of Muslims into pluralistic society in Canada by developing a mutual understanding and respect of different religious and cultural communities in the promotion of peace, justice and tolerance;

(o) to support, encourage, promote and develop a mutual respect for religious freedoms for all faith communities in Canada and abroad in order to protect against religious discrimination and persecution

(p) to develop, establish, operate, maintain, facilitate and co-ordinate study centres, retreat centres, conference centres and related facilities to further the objects herein;

(q) to lease or acquire in whole land for the purposes of the Corporation;

(r) to establish, own, and/or operate one or more publishing offices, printing plants, distribution centres, or retail facilities for the publication, printing, distribution and sale of all types of literature and publications directly related to the charitable objects herein;

(s) to produce programs and materials directly related to the charitable objects herein for presentation, broadcast and distribution on any means of audio, visual, computer, electronic or other forms of communication as may become available from time to time;

(t) to receive and maintain a fund or funds for the objects herein and to apply from time to time all or part of the income and/or capital thereof for the objects herein and for the benefit of charitable organizations that are registered pursuant to the Income Tax Act (Canada) that have charitable objects similar to those herein;

(u) to associate and affiliate with any association or organization, incorporated or unincorporated, with charitable objects similar to those herein;

(v) to give property and funds of the corporation to charitable organizations that are “qualified donees” as defined under the Income Tax Act of Canada, as amended from time to time, to further the objects stated herein; and

(w) to carry on “related businesses” within the meaning of the Income Tax Act of Canada as amended from time to time in furtherance of the purposes stated herein.

  1. For the attainment of the above objects and as incidental and ancillary thereto, to exercise any of the powers as prescribed by the Canada Corporations Act or any other statutes or laws from time to time applicable, except where such power is contrary to the statutes or common law relating to charities and in particular without limiting the generality of the foregoing:

(a) to solicit, receive, hold, invest and administer funds hereafter given to it exclusively for such charitable purposes as above set forth and, to that end, to take and receive, by bequest, devise, legacies, gift, grant, donation or benefit of trust, and enter into agreements, contracts and undertakings incidental thereto;

(b) to acquire by purchase, lease, devise, gift, or otherwise, real property, and to hold such real property or interest therein necessary for the actual use and occupation of the Corporation or for carrying on of its charitable undertaking, and when no longer necessary, to sell, dispose of and convey the same or any part thereof;

(c) to acquire by purchase, contract, donation, legacy, gift, grant, bequest or otherwise, any personal property, and to enter into and carry out any agreements, contracts or undertakings incidental thereto, and to sell, dispose of and convey the same or any part there of, as may be considered advisable;

(d) to invest and reinvest the funds of the Corporation in such manner as determined by the directors from time to time, including investments in mutual funds, and in making such investments, the directors shall not be limited to investments authorized or criteria established by law for trustees, provided that such investments are reasonable, prudent and sagacious under the circumstances and do not constitute either directly or indirectly a conflict of interest;

(e) to employ any investment manager or managers to invest money that is required to be invested and to pay the compensation of such investment manager or managers from the capital and/or income of such investment manager or managers is reasonable, prudent and sagacious under the circumstances;

(f) to establish a common trust fund in which donations received by the Corporation, whether or not designated, are combined for the purpose of facilitating investment and to operate such fund in accordance with terms of reference established by the Board from time to time;

(g) to employ and pay such assistants, clerks, agents, representatives, and employees, and to establish, equip, furnish, maintain, operate, manage and staff appropriate offices, facilities and programs complementing such purposes, and to incur such reasonable expenses as may be necessary therein;

(h) to accumulate from time to time part of the fund or funds of the Corporation or the income therefrom subject to any statutes or laws from time to time when applicable;

(i) to exercise all voting rights to authorize and direct the execution and delivery of proxies in connection with the shares or obligations in any company or corporation held by the Corporation;

(j) to take up proportions of any increased capital of a company or corporation in which the Corporation may at any time hold shares or obligations, to purchase any additional shares or obligations in such company or corporation; to join in any plan for the reconstruction or re-organization or for the sale of assets of any company or corporation, or part thereof; to enter into any pooling or other agreement in connection with the shares or obligations of a company or corporation held by the Corporation; and to give consent to the creation of any mortgage, lien or indebtness of any company or corporation whose shares or obligations are held by the Corporation;

(k) to require payment of all sums of monies and claims to any real or personal property in which the Corporation may have an interest, and to compromise in any such claims, and generally to pursue payment in its corporate name through whatever means are available at law;

(l) to draw, make, endorse, execute and issue cheques and other negotiable instruments; and

(m) to perform any manner of actions as are incidental or conducive to the attaining of the above mentioned objectives.
