As you may know, the Canadian Islamic Congress is facilitating the work of a group of law students and grads who have filed human rights complaints against Maclean's magazine for its refusal to publish a response to an October 2006 article, "The Future Belongs to Islam," authored by Mark Steyn.
The article's thesis is that due to immigration and high birth rates -- and the belief that "enough" Muslims share the basic goals of terrorists -- Muslims are poised to take over Western societies and impose Islamic Law.
Steyn's article further states that the only question is how "bloody" the Muslim takeover will be.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Between January 2005 and July 2007, Maclean's published 20 articles with similar tone and content; and not a single counterview article was published to balance any of them.
For more information and background, please refer to the full report at: www.canadianislamiccongress.com/ar/Report_on_Macleans_Journalism.pdf
Hearings for the above-mentioned complaints have been scheduled before the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal in June 2008, while the Ontario and Federal Humans Rights Commissions are still investigating the submissions made to them.
Prominent Canadian litigation lawyer, Faisal Joseph, and the law students and grads are working on this case pro-bono.
However, we need assistance in covering other significant costs such as expert witnesses and potential appeals to the courts.
We are pursuing these complaints against one of the richest corporations in Canada -- Rogers Inc., which is the owner of Maclean's Magazine and many other media outlets.
We are standing up for the right of the Muslim community to be free from hate speech and media-propagated Islamophobia, and this is expensive.
Therefore, in order to move forward and ultimately benefit not only Muslims but all Canadians, we need your assistance.
Please help the law students and the CIC in protecting the future of the Canadian Muslim community and its right to be free from hate and slander.
The CIC urges members, friends, and concerned Canadians to support this case : www.canadianislamiccongress.com/support_recurring.php
