AMERICAN BOMB-BUILDING ACCUSATIONS "SCIENTIFICALLY UNFOUNDED"
The Canadian Islamic Congress is congratulating Iran on having produced low-level enriched nuclear fuel this week, calling the achievement "an important step forward" in improving the country's long term economic well-being.
Today's CIC statement stressed international expert opinion that Iran's low-level enriched uranium capability -- suitable only for industrial output -- is years away from the elevated production required for nuclear weapons.
With only 164 centrifuges operating (thousands would be needed to create weapons-grade fuel) the CIC says Iran should be given a reasonable and respectful chance to develop nuclear energy sources "at a level that would not raise even an eyebrow in any Western or industrially developed nation" and that "Canada, with its expertise in civilian nuclear technology, could provide valuable assistance at this stage."
The CIC called American opposition to any nuclear capability for Iran "counterproductive and provocative," saying fears by the U.S., Israel, and their allies that Iran wants only to produce nuclear weapons "are scientifically unfounded."
"We hope that Wednesday's visit to Iran by International Atomic Energy Agency head, Mohamed El Baradei, will help to reduce the global panic that Washington seems determined to incite and that more reasoned understanding will prevail," the CIC statement concluded.
